Flaws in Stories and Continuities and Unanswered Questions
The following contains spoilers for Prey, now playing on Hulu.
In Hulu's Prey, Amber Midthunder's Comanche warrior, Naru, helped reshape the Predator lore by being part of the Yautja's first hunt on Earth. It led to a brutal war, with many of Naru's tribe dying, including her brother, Taabe. Luckily, Naru and her dog rallied, devising a plan to take the alien invader down and protect the rest of her clan. However, with the film's breakneck pace, plot holes and unanswered questions were sure to pop up.
How Did Naru Survive the Tree Drama?
When initially tracking prey at night, one of Naru's comrades got taken out of a tree by a mountain lion. Naru then fell off the branch when it attacked her, hitting her head on a rock. First, one has to wonder why the lion didn't go after her and finish its assault. But Naru also cracked her head good, with a fall that should have at least caused more permanent damage or death before Taabe got her home for treatment.
What Did the Yautja Do With the Bear Skull?
The Predator killed a fox before flaying its fur and skin and attaching its head to his waist. However, the Predator also murdered a bear, so one has to wonder what it did with that giant skull. Sure, it'd be tough to carry it around in battle, but that's the rules the Yautja live and fight by. It could have even been a weapon, as the Predator used the humans' tools against them.
How Did No One Hear the Horse Raid in Prey?
The Yautja snuck up behind some French fur-trappers as they laid a trap for it. It came out of the fog, killing off men one by one. The problem is, they were all in a line close together, so they were bound to see or hear the commotion. Even when the horses started running off, someone should have noticed this drama happening alongside them. The Yautja didn't even use its invisibility mode, which still wouldn't have covered up the slaughter.
What Did the Predator's Bomb Do in Prey?
In Predator movies, the wrist gauntlet acts as a self-destruct tool, blowing up when the hunter gets defeated. In this case, the Yautja used it as a weapon against the Frenchmen. Admittedly, it's strange they'd approach the gauntlet after seeing it levitating. But more importantly, the overhead shot didn't reveal any explosion -- just a shockwave. It'd have been cool to see what exactly happened. Maybe disintegrating nets got shot out, which would have been a primitive yet innovative act for the Yautja back then.
Why Didn't Taabe Run Away With Naru?
Taabe ended up rescuing his sister at the French site, cutting up the Predator a lot in a gory brawl. However, he decided to stay and fight, buying time for Naru to flee. But it made no sense as they could have escaped together, used their tracking skills to detect if the creature was in the trees or the ground and worked together to take it down. Taabe made things more difficult for Naru, who would have meshed well with him during a fight.
Why Couldn't the Yautja Spot Naru Behind the Tree?
Naru hid behind a tree at the French camp early on, but that happened before she took the orange flower that lowered her body temperature, which would have rendered her invisible to its infrared vision. It should have detected her, though, because it did just that to a Frenchman Naru used as bait. He was near a log, but when the camera showed the Yautja's vision, it could see through the wood and recognize his heat signature.
Why Didn't the Headshots Kill Naru in Prey?
The Predator's shield was so sharp that it could slice skulls open. Yet, when it smacked Naru in the head, it just banged on her. It should be cutting her at the very least, especially if there's supposed to be continuity with the weapon. As it stands, it makes it look like Naru had a lot of plot armor when they scrapped.
Why Didn't Naru Spear the Predator?
Naru ended up with the Predator's staff, pushing herself to use it as a spear. But when she was about to chuck it from close range and try to impale the alien, it retracted the length, making it a short spear. Still, the end was sharp and pointy, so there's no reason for her not to fling it. Her stopping the throw felt like plot convenience to make the fight last longer.
Why Stand Next to the Predator in Prey?
When Naru used the Frenchman as bait, she stood right in the path where the Yautja would have to walk. That made no sense because it could have bumped into her, even though she was invisible to it after ingesting the orange flower. She even saw this happen with Raphael, who was cloaked, when the Yautja still stepped on him, causing him to scream and get gutted. It was another dramatic shot that didn't make Naru seem that tactically deft.
Did More Yautja Arrive in Prey?
Prey's credits depicted the film's events via animation, ending with more Yautja ships arriving. Naru's people were left panicking, leaving folks wondering if the Yautja ambushed them immediately after. It wouldn't be in their code, but the lore could have changed. If they did maintain their honor, though, it could be the film foreshadowing a sequel after Naru's people move to better ground.
